trading card
bighugelab
Students make a trading card to give to their new teacher on the last day of school.
We brainstormed a list of topics they'd want their new teacher to know about them. We discussed how to copy and paste the word favorite. I modeled how to do it with a right click. We also talked about other ways.
Kids took turns taking pictures of the person sitting next to them. I uploaded them to the common folder on our server.
Then the day we made the cards we went to Big Huge Labs and uploaded the picture, picked a background color and added our name for the title and future job for sub title and then copied our Word document. We saved the finished product to their folder. Then we inserted it into a Word document and resized it so we had 6 copies on one page.

Life Cycle of a Frog
KidPix

Students raise tadpoles in their classroom as part of a life science unit. They draw the life cycle of the frog to demonstrate their knowledge. I have also had students create a kidpix slide show of the life cycle with voice narration on each slide explaining the cycle.

word story telling
Students watched a slideshow to get their creative juices flowing. Everyone began with the same sentence "I went to Mardi Gras last night, and you won't believe what happened to me!" Students were split into teams of 4-5. They were allowed to add the second sentence. When the music stops, they rotate to their teammates computer. Each person adds to their teammates story until everyone has rotated one time. The student then finalizes their story and adds clipart pictures. 2-3 week project.

PowerPoint slideshow
Students complete a 5-slide All About Me PowerPoint activity. Slides include Title, About Me, My Family, Things I Like, and Character Web. Students brought in pictures from home to insert into their family slide. I took individual pictures of all students for them to use on their About Me slide. Students will present their slideshow to the class after about 3-4 weeks of work.

  • Use tables in Word
  • Upload pictures to a web site
  • Use microphones connected to computer to record
  • Demonstrate respect for others
voicethread, word, web2.0
  1. Students use a drawing software program such as KidPix or Paint to create a self-portrait.
  2. Self-portraits are uploaded as slides for the Voicethread and used to create icons for each student. This could be done either by the student or the teacher. Since we were short on time, I did this uploading myself as students recorded using generic identities on VoiceThread and generic slides that I had created for each student until their self-portraits were completed.
  3. Students use Word (or other word processing program) to create a table of the students in their class and one or two sentences detailing something they like about that student. These will be approved by the teacher before the student can record on VoiceThread.
  4. After all slides are created, students record their What I Like About You sentences on each of the self-portrait slides in the VoiceThread.

I would probably split this in to multiple types of projects next year. I would have the students create a self-portrait or take photos for use throughout the year on multiple projects maybe even at the beginning of the year. Then this project would just focus on using tables in Word, writing their messages about each student and recording on VoiceThread. The kids had a great time recording and these turned out well especially considering we did this project with a limited amount of time.
